1. Check your gas cap.

2. Make sure it’s really the check engine light.

In addition to the check engine light, you probably also have a variety of other warning lights on your CR-V’s or Civic’s gauge cluster. These warning lights include a car battery light, an oil change light, and a windshield washer fluid light.

3. Determine if it’s your catalytic converter.

If there’s an issue with your catalytic converter, that means your Honda Accord needs immediate service. Usually if this is the case, your check engine light will flash on the gauge cluster, and that’s because it’s an emergency that needs to be taken care of immediately.

4. Consider other reasons the check engine light might be on.

There are many other reasons that you check engine light might be on—many of which require immediate attention. Here are just a few possibilities:

  • Oxygen sensor
  • Mass airflow sensor
  • Spark plugs
  • Wires

6. Bring your Honda in for service.

While some experienced car owners may be able to determine what’s wrong with a vehicle, it’s generally a good rule to simply play it safe and bring it into a trusted technician who can run a professional diagnostics test right away.
